1 Utama announces New Partnership with Budimas for its “Book Matters” Book Donation Drive 2024

“Read BOOKS, change the WORLD” – Through the written word, knowledge is power. Books can enlighten, spark imagination and change narratives, while reading is a constant fuel required by our minds to develop knowledge and enrich perspectives.

Inspired by the philosophy that every book matters, 1 Utama encourages shoppers to actively participate in the sustainable circulation of books through its “Book Matters: Gift A Book, Gift A Future” campaign. Launched in November 2022, shoppers can conveniently drop-off new or preloved books at the mall’s one-stop recycling hub 1RECYCLING CENTRE. Donated books are then distributed to underprivileged families and to schools, libraries, learning centres and beyond – to promote literacy and share the joy of reading.

Building upon the continued success of Book Matters, 1 Utama is thrilled to announce its new partnership for 2024 with The Budimas Charitable Foundation as part of its ongoing commitment to further expand the reach and impact of the programme. With this partnership, 1 Utama aims to benefit an additional 10,000 beneficiaries in need of literary resources and educational support.

For 2023, a total of 35,958 books were donated by 1 Utama, benefiting over 150,000 individuals across various communities through collaborative efforts with previous NGO partner, Books for A Better World.

“The importance of books is invaluable in imparting life’s lessons through reading and education. The concept of our Book Matters campaign is to rescue books from being thrown away or left idling on shelves. Our goal is to pass on the magic of stories and adventures and let books travel to be gifted to those with few of their own. We hope to collect as many books as we can and would like to thank our shoppers for supporting us,” said Lee Li Lian, 1 Utama’s Public Relations and Sustainability Senior Manager.

“1 Utama and Budimas are committed to making a positive difference in the community. Together, we will continue to promote literacy and education, ensuring that more individuals have access to the transformative power of books,” added Jacqueline Wong, Finance & Administration Manager of The Budimas Charitable Foundation.

With the synergized efforts of the public with both 1 Utama and Budimas, the impact of Book Matters fostering a culture of reading and learning, while promoting sustainable practices, will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
