Launch of Hydrogen Reactor (HyPEReactor) by NanoMalaysia Berhad

The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), YB Chang Lih Kang, today unveiled the HyPEReactor, an innovative solid-state-based hydrogen reactor developed by NanoMalaysia Berhad through a partnership with HyPERTech Industries Sdn Bhd, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Fuel Cell Institute, and ADmatix Solutions Sdn Bhd. This game-changing technology is evidence of the potential of hydrogen as an alternative means of energy generated on-demand in the quest for more sustainable energy.

The HyPEReactor is a modular and customizable hydrogen generation system that uses sodium borohydride (NaBH4). This system enables the rapid production of hydrogen as per market demand and stores hydrogen in solid form, reducing the need for high-pressure liquid storage while introducing a cost-effective approach to hydrogen storage.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation YB Chang Lih Kang said: “NanoMalaysia’s HyPEReactor aligns seamlessly with the recently launched Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). HyPEReactor supports our ambitious goals of achieving global decarbonisation targets and plays a pivotal role in developing a robust and competitive ecosystem across the hydrogen value chain. The development of the Hydrogen Generator (HyPEReactor) by NanoMalaysia, offers on-demand hydrogen generation with a focus on cost savings, and energy efficiency; with its easily adaptable modular design, and expandability according to specific usage needs. HyPEReactor represents an example of hydrogen technology advancement in the pursuit of a sustainable clean energy future.”

The reactor’s initial application focuses on mobility needs and can effectively power 1kW Fuel Cells, with the potential for seamless scalability. It represents a mature and advanced solution for portable hydrogen storage, placing Malaysia in a unique position for decentralised power generation. HyPEReactor’s hallmark lies in its capacity for high-flow hydrogen production, granting superior energy density. Engineered for mobility, this technology is both lightweight and capable of extended operation, even after prolonged rest periods.

Globally, the HyPEReactor offers versatile applications across various sectors, enabling the storage and delivery of usable energy to power the grid, drive industrial processes, and create energy-dense fuels crucial for long-haul trucks and aeroplanes. They have proven to be optimal for an extensive range of uses, spanning from vehicles (50-125 kW) and laptop computers (20-50 W) to homes (1-5 kW) and central power generation (1-200 MW or more). Central to the HyPEReactor’s innovation is using Sodium Borohydride (NaBH4) for on-site and on-demand hydrogen production.

This strategic approach ensures cost efficiency and presents a range of benefits, including clean, efficient, and economical energy generation. By harnessing recycled NaBH4 through an adjacent project, the reactor achieves substantial cost reductions compared to conventional sources. This streamlined approach increases efficiency in converting hydrogen to usable energy via Fuel Cells. NanoMalaysia’s goals through the development of HyPEReactor include achieving a targeted cost reduction of over 30% compared to conventional hydrogen technologies while simultaneously enhancing energy conversion efficiency. NanoMalaysia is committed to achieving over 70% energy efficiency and reducing losses during hydrogen production. NanoMalaysia is also committed to improving reactor design and expanding the Green Hydrogen Supply Chain (GHSC).

NanoMalaysia Berhad Group CEO Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said: “NanoMalaysia has an unwavering commitment in driving technological advancements that contribute to HETR’s vision of becoming a leading hydrogen economy country by 2050 while fully supporting both the National Energy Policy and National Energy Transition Roadmap. Through venture-building project investments, multilateral collaborations, and continuous innovation, NanoMalaysia’s HyPEReactor is poised to transform the clean energy landscape and serve as a catalyst for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and empowered citizenry by democratizing hydrogen economy ownership.”

NanoMalaysia’s HyPEReactor aligns with PRECISE, an initiative recently introduced by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) to develop the nation’s Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) industries. PRECISE focuses on People-centric approaches, Research and Development, Enculturation, Capacity building, Investment, and the Startup Ecosystem.

The project also marks a significant milestone in on-demand hydrogen generation, contributing to various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This dedication to innovation and sustainability is poised to reshape the energy landscape, driving advancements in hydrogen technology and ushering in a more sustainable future.
