Review – OnePlus 10T 5G

OnePlus T variant is finally back. After missing out on the 9 series line-up, the Chinese tech company has brought back the T variant in OnePlus 10T 5G to challenge the top players in the market. Commonly dubbed as a flagship killer, this latest model emerges as a strong and fast candidate while still maintaining its competitive price.

At the first glance, the OnePlus 10T 5G resembles the look of its predecessor, OnePlus 10 Pro 5G. While the two devices share the same mobile platform and most of the features, OnePlus 10T 5G was enhanced with the latest advanced technology. Can it outdo its predecessor and make a strong stand in the flagship segment?

Design

OnePlus 10T 5G features a unibody design that seamlessly blends the camera modules with the slim and curvy phone body. The body size is similar to the majority of flagship smartphone models in the market. With a dimension of 163.0 mm (H) x 75.4 mm (W) and a thickness of just 8.75 mm, the OnePlus 10T 5G easily fit into your palm for one-hand operation. The phone’s weight of 203.5 g doesn’t burden the grip during long hours of usage.

The first impression of the OnePlus 10T 5G comes from its stunning screen. Powered by a 6.7″ 120 Hz FHD+ Fluid Display, this smartphone looking good from all angle. The 120Hz refresh rate means silky-smooth scrolling and ease on the eyes. Additionally, the Adaptive Frame Rate technology provides effortlessly transition between 60, 90, and 120 Hz, so you can pick the one that suits you the most.

The gorgeous AMOLED display is equipped with always-on HDR10+ and 10-bit colour depth which enhances the visual performance of your favourite video. OnePlus 10T 5G also provides additional display features to tweak the screen for comfort, such as Eye comfort, Image sharpener, Bright HDR video mode, etc. To put the icing on the cake, the OnePlus 10T 5G’s amazing display is protected under the Corning Gorilla Glass.

A total of 15 antennas form the OnePlus 10T 5G’s 360° antenna system that provides users with stronger Wi-Fi and cellular signals. Users might not feel its presence, but this will come in handy in network-congested areas.

Performance

Processor

Evolve Beyond Speed. OnePlus 10T 5G embodies this tagline by incorporating the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform with the core of Qualcomm Kryo CPU. This octa-core CPU offers 10% faster CPU performance with a 30% improvement in power efficiency. For graphics processing, the embedded Qualcomm Adreno GPU offers up to 10% faster GPU clock speeds with a 30% power reduction.

Accompanying the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform are 256 GB of UFS 3.1 two-lane storage and a whopping 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The extensive amount of RAM on the OnePlus 10T 5G is the first for the brand. That is 2 times more than the standard RAM equipped on the major laptops in the market. What does it mean in daily operation? You can suspend up to 35 applications at once! 16 GB of RAM enables OnePlus 10T 5G to simultaneously and effortlessly run multiple applications at the same time while providing seamless switching between them. You can enjoy faster, smoother, and uninterrupted user experiences at all times. For the extreme user, there’s an option for further expansion of up to 7GB of virtual RAM, granting the user an astounding 16+7GB of RAM.

What to do with so much RAM and a powerful processor? Of course, we go for mobile gaming. OnePlus 10T 5G didn’t label itself as a gaming smartphone, but the potential is there to explore when you have an outstanding hardware specs and an amazing screen. The first impression of gaming on the OnePlus 10T 5G is smooth and fast. The vibrant display, accompanied by stereo sound, immerses the user into the gaming world without any lag. OnePlus 10T 5G also features the HyperBoost Gaming Engine to improve your gaming experience.

To sustain the level of high-performance application and gaming for extensive periods, the OnePlus 10T 5G features the largest and most advanced cooling system ever from OnePlus – offering a total cooling area of over 37,000 mm2. The cooling is achieved via a cryo-velocity vapor chamber with 8 dissipation channels and a redesigned micron-level 3D capillary dissipation structure, working in tandem to offer up to twice the dissipation ability of traditional smartphone vapor chambers. In short, more gaming times without extra heat.

Battery

OnePlus 10T 5G is packed with a 4,800 mAh battery to sustain one whole day of production and entertainment. What makes it stand out from the competitors is the 150W SUPERVOOC Endurance Edition, which is capable of charging the battery from 1-100% in just 19 minutes. This is handier than a larger battery capacity in most situations, provided you have the charger with you.

Concern about the battery life? No worry, because OnePlus 10T 5G has a built-in Battery Health Engine – an exclusive technology that powers two key features – the Smart Battery Health Algorithm and Battery Healing Technology – designed to extend the lifespan and preserve the capacity of the device’s battery.

Camera

Despite the impressive hardware, OnePlus 10T 5G doesn’t come equipped with the famous H-brand camera lens like its predecessor. This might be a disappointment for the skeptics but is hardly a deal breaker for the users. OnePlus 10T 5G sports the popular triple rear camera system based on the flagship 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor. They are the standard lens, the ultra-wide lens with 119.9° field of view, and a macro lens for up-close and personal shooting. Although there’s 2X zoom option on the camera, it would be nice to have a better tele zoom lens available.

The camera on OnePlus 10T 5G performs greatly in both indoor and outdoor shooting. The large 1/1.56-inch sensor size, combined with OIS and EIS support allows users to capture clear shots with rich details, even in low light and challenging environments. The main camera of the OnePlus 10T 5G is capable of capturing photos in full 10-bit colour mode, with more colour depth and better colour accuracy. The new Image Clarity Engine (ICE) with an upgraded algorithm also enables the device to capture photos faster and with greater levels of detail.

After testing the OnePlus 10T 5G in various environments and lighting conditions, I am satisfied with the results. I managed to get most of the decent shots without tweaking the camera setting. It’s easy and straightforward shooting using the OnePlus 10T 5G. During outdoor shooting, the built-in HDR makes sure the exposure is well-balanced. The high-megapixel sensor captures the images in fine detail with accurate colour rendering. When it comes to indoor and low-light situations, the camera still performs well by producing steady shots with satisfying details. Nightscape 2.0 certainly helped under that condition.

Verdict

When companies make smartphones, they often decide on either the budget market or the top-end flagship segment. There are not many alternatives in between for consumers who are looking for a performance smartphone without breaking the bank. This is where the OnePlus 10T 5G comes in as a strong contender. Backed by outstanding hardware and stable OxygenOS, the OnePlus 10T 5G performed seamlessly throughout the entire testing period. Even the power-hungry applications and mobile gaming didn’t give any hard time to OnePlus 10T 5G.

OnePlus 10T 5G does have its flaws. The battery is slightly smaller compared to the competitors, although the 150W SUPERVOOC can compensate for this with its ultra-fast charging. OnePlus 10T 5G didn’t inherit its big brother’s camera and thus suffered from image quality in comparison. The camera still performs well in a well-lit environment but will suffer in difficult lighting conditions. The standard triple rear camera modules are decent but didn’t offer anything special or innovative.

Overall OnePlus 10T 5G is a welcome addition to this competitive segment. While the OnePlus 10T 5G doesn’t have a big camera like the majority of its competitors, it excels in productivity and entertainment applications regardless. The friendly price tag (RM3199) is certainly a big plus for potential owners in this competitive market. If you don’t mind the slightly smaller battery and the slightly average camera, OnePlus 10T 5G is one of the best choices in the market.
