Sony’s latest successor and heir apparent to last year’s powerful RX 100 Mark III has finally touched down on our shores. The RX 100 IV looks externally similar though it has quite a few incremental improvements under the hood.

In terms of hardware, the RX100 IV doesn’t rock the boat with radical changes since its predecessors already scored high marks as a super compact. The RX 100 IV has a 24-70mm Zeiss Vario Sonnar T 24-70 F1.8-F2.8 lens up 2.9x optical zoom in a matte black compact magnesium alloy body that weighs about 270g.

20-MP shots and videos both in 1080P and in 4K resolution are taken via the tiltable rear LCD that has a 1.2 million dot resolution or the 2.35 million dot XGA OLED EVF that is similar to the RX 100 III last year. It’s a bit fiddly in that you have to nudge the EVF up and out to make use of it but it’s otherwise one of the most compact and efficient systems yet crammed into something of its size. Curious minds will note the mention that the LCD is tiltable; you can flip it all the way up to snap selfies.

The biggest improvement is the inclusion of a stacked 1.0 Exmor RS CMOS sensor with an attached DRAM chip to pull off quite a few tricks that were previously the province of pro-level shooters that weigh and cost as much as a tank. Among the features that the RX100 IV can pull off are 960fps super slow motion video, a 1/32000 second anti-distortion shutter and, of keen interest to auteurs, the aforementioned 4K (3,840 x 2160) at 100Mbps video shooting mode using the XAVC S codec for up to five minutes at a time. While shooting 4K video the RX 100 Mk IV is also able to snap 16.8-MP stills even while you’re still filming. The RX 100 Mk IV’s Exmor RS CMOS sensor also allows for a swift 0.09 seconds of autofocus time and continuous 16fps burst mode. Get the plastic ready though as the RX100 IV costs a princely RM3,799 though if you hustle now to their online store, you can get a 64GB Class 10 SD card worth RM366 and a leather casing (LCJ-RXG/BC) worth RM499 bundled with it. You best hustle though as the promotion is valid till 9th August 2015. For more details swing by www.sony.com.my
