Canon EOS RP – The cheapest new full frame mirrorless camera in Malaysia history

It is expected that Canon will release a value for money range of full frame mirrorless camera to gain back some lost market shares, Today, they released the EOS RP and unexpectedly, Canon swirls a whip with it, lashing a killer price of RM5,999 for the body, the cheapest in the full frame mirrorless segment, and possibly the lowest in Malaysia history. They are very serious about taking back the throne.

A quick glance on the Canon EOS RP, these are some information you need to know as a buying guide:

Image Sensor
A full frame 26.2 megapixels with the state of the art Digic 8 image with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the same one found on the EOR R. The EOS RP offers a powerful Dual Sensing IS system that reduces camera shake for handheld photography, and a silent shooting scene mode for discreet shooting.

Autofocus
Dual Pixel CMOS AF with contract AF (for 4K movie recording) with a maximum of 4779 focusing points (EOS R has 5655 points), the face and eye tracking and touch & drag AF is available as found on the EOS R. The focusing speed is blazing fast, at 0.05 seconds, faster than our eyes!

Speed
The maximum shutter is set at 1/4000 and as slow as 30 seconds, with bulb mode and flash sync at 1/180. ISO speed starts from 50 to as high as 102,400 for low light situation. Canon’s recommended IOS was set at 100-40,000 which are pretty useable event at 40k level. The drive system allows up to 5 frames per second continuous shooting, we suggest this speed is cool enough for regular use.

Movie
You bet! It is a 4K camera, with 30p and Full HD at 60p. It comes with a microphone jack and Audio monitor jack, mini HDMI output. This is a go-to camera if you are regular video makers with a fair share of photography involved.

Sharing
Wifi and bluetooth, enable easy sharing to smartphones.

Build & Power
Weather and dust sealed body. The camera is built around a magnesium alloy chassis with high precision outer body parts and for the battery, unexpectedly, EOS RP uses the M series battery type (EOS M5, M6), we are yet to test the stamina. Check the review soon. USB charging is possible through an optional USB power adapter PD-E1.

Other stuff
An SD Card slot, OLED viewfinder with 2.36 million dots, Vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor with 1 million dots.
