Samsung’s eagerly awaited GALAXY S6 and S6 edge smartphones have finally landed in Malaysia with a major launch today. Both phones are a major departure from Samsung’s prior preferences of heavily favouring polycarbonate casings. Both phones instead boast of a casing hewn from metal and tough Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on both the front and rear.
The S6 and S6 edge both sport a crisp 5.1-inch WQHD Super AMOLED display with a whopping 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. Where both phones differ is that the S6 edge comes with dual curved notification screens flanking either side of the touchscreen that was earlier seen on the earlier Galaxy Note Edge. They’re both breathtakingly slim as well with the S6 is just 6.8mm thin with the S6 edge just a wee bit thicker at 7mm. Both phones are surprisingly light too with the S6 weighing just 138g and the S6 edge even lighter at 132g.
In terms of hardware, both phones come with Samsung’s own 64-bit octa-core processor that pairs a swift 2.1GHz quad processor with a 1.5GHz quad processor, 3GB RAM and, for Malaysia, 32GB capacity and Cat 4 LTE connectivity with Android Lollipop running under the hood with Samsung’s tweaked TouchWiz user interface overlaying Lollipop.
The new phones both come with a rear 16-MP camera with optical image stabilisation and an F/1.9 aperture along with a Quick Launch feature that lets you start snapping away in just 0.7 seconds by double clicking the home key button. The front camera is a 5-MP model with Samsung’s Wide Selfie mode so you can fit in more people in the shot.
While the battery is non-removable for either phone, both phones have wireless charging capability so you don’t have to deal with entangling wires underfoot along with a fast charging mode that nets you an average of four hours of use with just a ten minute charge. The S6 has a 2,550mAh battery while the S6 edge has a slightly larger 2600mAh battery.
