Samsung Launches SMART Library

Kuala Lumpur (16 June 2014) – Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (PNM) unveiled today Malaysia’s first Samsung SMART Library at its premises along Jalan Tun Razak. Located at the first floor of the National Library’s main building – Anjung Bestari, the first of its kind digital-book reading zone ensued from an unprecedented public-private partnership between PNM and Samsung Malaysia Electronic (SME) Sdn. Bhd.

The launch was officiated by Y.B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia in the presence of YBhg. Dato’ Raslin bin Abu Bakar, Director-General of Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia, and Mr. Lee Dong Yong, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn. Bhd.

The Samsung SMART Library at PNM is poised to provide a new and interactive reading experience for Malaysians, especially youth and children, within an enhanced technology-enabled library environment.

Officiating the unveiling of the Samsung SMART Library, Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz said, “Malaysia is on the path towards Vision 2020. More than that, we are striving for a shift towards becoming a knowledge-based society and a high-skilled economy that relies on intellectual capital, creativity and innovation as prime movers of our country’s economic growth. To the end, we need to become Digital Malaysia; arming and empowering Malaysians with ICT knowledge 2020. The creation of the Samsung SMART Library is a step to making these visions a reality.”

“Since its inception, Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia has been tasked to make information available to all and encourage the cultivation of reading habit amongst Malaysians. Knowledge consumption has evolved. The era of digital content has overtaken traditional manuscripts. We are heartened to collaborate with Samsung Malaysia Electronics in creating a first of its kind in Malaysia – a SMART Library – designed to enhance knowledge accessibility and learning through the use of the latest technology for all,” said Dato’ Raslin bin Abu Bakar, Director-General of PNM.

In line with the Malaysian Vision, the Samsung SMART Library is an initial effort built to support the Government’s transformation of Malaysia into a knowledge-based society that is powered by ICT know-how by year 2020. The users of Samsung SMART Library have the opportunities to explore Samsung’s technology and use this facility for leisure readings and researchers. Overall, this SMART Library is set to benefit more than 400,000 yearly visitors to the National Library.

Designed and built as an inviting space with e-Books, the 1,300 square feet area has four specific concepts – Kids, Interactive, Reading and Work. There are over 60 Samsung devices for users comprising different models of tables and large format displays.

We live in a digital era where knowledge sharing and learning is increasingly taking place online. The Samsung SMART Library offers an enhanced reading experience through latest product offerings that makes learning enjoyable, interactive and more engaging with rich media content,” said Lee Dong Yong, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn. Bhd.

Over 2,500 e-Book titles of various genres in English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese are available at the Reading Zone. Supplementary content such as e-Magazines, e-Newspapers and interactive websites can be accessed at the Interactive Zone. The Work Zone also offers Office Suite and e-Book publishing for budding writers. Furthermore, software suitable for children is offered at Kids Zone.

The Samsung SMART Library is part of Samsung Global Corporate Citizenship efforts to employ its technology and expertise for the betterment of local communities.
