NVIDIA is giving power — loads of GPU computing power — to the cloud with NVIDIA GRID technology. High performance computing and virtual desktop infrastructure, also known as VDI, are just some of the graphics-intensive applications that can benefit from this move, which offloads graphics processing from the CPU to the GPU in virtualized environments.
SuperMicro showed how this could be done at Computex in Taipei this week. It ran a Siemens Teamcenter demo on the show floor to show how users can collaborate on the product lifecycle management software. The application ran without a flaw on a virtual desktop, almost as if the graphics card was sitting on the desktop PC.
According to Peter Yang, product marketing manager of SuperMicro, there’s nothing like NVIDIA GRID. “When we showed this to potential clients, they were very impressed by the ability to share GPU power across the enterprise,” he said.
Virtualized GPU power can be shared among workers in departments, workgroups or small companies. This gives users a responsive, rich multimedia experience and improves productivity.
At larger enterprises, data center managers can also deploy NVIDIA GRID to deliver graphics-rich experiences to more users. Users can access critical applications from anywhere and on any device.
